Spring is right around the corner, but the temperatures aren’t the only thing that are going up these days. In a recent study by HR Solutions International, employee engagement levels increased from 27 percent in 2010 to 29 percent in 2011.

No, this isn’t another “Hallmark holiday” or one of those made-up days to try and get a day off work. Employee Appreciation Day is a day set aside to make staff feel valued and important in our hectic business world. Scheduled for Friday, Mar. 2, Employee Appreciation Day is a perfect time to take a moment and say thank you to your staff.
There is no doubt in my mind that companies believe in the value of employee recognition programs. According to WorldatWork’s recent Trends in Employee Recognition report (May 2011), 86% of companies surveyed claimed to have a recognition solution in place (70% of those having as many as 3-6 different programs). However, research like Gallup Organization’s now infamous survey of 4 million employees indicates as many as two-thirds of employees cannot recall receiving formal recognition in the past 12 months. Traditional employee recognition programs just are not connecting with employees. As a result, what they end up with are ineffective programs that fail to be meaningful, memorable, or measurable.
